Reflection Blog

In this blog I just wanted to talk about the website we had to create for class. When I first saw that we had to do a website I was a little nervous because I did not think that I could do it. It took a lot of hard work but I enjoyed the experience. I love viewing my webpage and I know it will be very helpful in the future. I love the idea of being able to share my website with future parents. It will be helpful to communicate with parents about classroom events and activities. Also on my website they can even see the lesson plans that I have planned every few weeks. I know there are many parents today that are very busy and are use to viewing emails and surfing the internet. I know that a website will fit perfectly into their busy lives because it will be something they are very familiar with.

I think my website will also improve student's learning because there are links to games and fun activities they can do with their parents. They can first learn about internet safety and then view all the fun links. There are links to websites where children can print anything from coloring pages to math worksheets. I think when these resources are easily available to children and their parents in a form they like to use, then they are more likely to use it. I think the new way of doing things on the computer is more appealing to children. Technology is a part of their world and we as teachers need to be on board for this change. We cannot be stuck in the past and old ways of doing things. We need to be creative with the technology we have so that children will be interested in learning. They love being on the internet and doing anything with technology. Therefore, I think my website will be very fun and informative for both students and parents.

Creativity Video

Sir Ken Robinson speaking on education and creativity
.http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity.html

In this video Sir Ken Robinson is trying to address to educators that creativity is just as important as literacy. He explains in the video that we are educating children out of creativity. He explains that everyone is born with creativity but somewhere along the way someone steers you off course. For example, someone might say to a child that likes art, "don't do art you will never be an artist." He also talks about being frightened of  being wrong. He says that we educate children and send them into the future telling them that mistakes are the biggest things you can do wrong. He wants educators to realize that being creative is not a bad thing and is necessary in children's development.

I completely agree with Sir Ken Robinson. He says at one point in the video that the arts is always at the bottom of hierarchy when you compare it with math, science, English, and reading. I think that the arts are just important because it is a way for children and adults to express themselves. It is a gift. We as educators also have to be creative in the classroom because this will inspire children to also be creative. We should lead by example. Our job as educators is to prepare children for the future and not every child's future includes math and science. Art and dance are just as important.
